What is massage?

The colloquial term ‘massage’ covers a wide variety of massage styles including: Relaxation, Deep Tissue, Anti-Cellulite, Lymphatic Drainage Massage and many more massage styles.

The practice of using conscious touch techniques as a healing method stems back over from customs that are rooted in ancient times. Civilizations in both the East and the West found that these natural healing methods are effective forms for healing the body, mind, and spirit from injuries and pain.

Historians and anthropologists have found evidence dating back more than 5000 years to China, Southeast Asia, India and Egypt with the first written records of massage therapy found in ‘The Yellow Emperor’s Classical Book of Internal Medicine’ dating to 2700 BC.

Thai massage is said to have been founded in Northern India over 2500 years ago by the Buddhas personal physician Shivago Komarpaj.

From the Hawaiian Islands comes Lomi Lomi a lineage system that is passed from Kumu (precious teacher) to student. This style of massage is also used within households as a method of nurturing and connecting the family in a holistic manner.

Native Americans used heat and massage with herbs to help heal from physical and spiritual challenges. The Cherokee and Navaho were among many tribes who rubbed their warriors before they went to war and when they returned. Massage was used to ease the labor pains of women and colic in infants.

The ancient Greeks valued the benefits of massage and used it in their daily lives. Specific techniques were developed to keep their athlete’s bodies in top condition between sporting competitions.

Inspired by native Aboriginal techniques, Kodo (melody or melodic) is a rhythmic massage that is designed to tone and re-align energy flow and enhance the balance between mind, body, and spirit.

The modern Western era massage began in the early 19th century when exercise physiotherapy and modern massage techniques were developed and then shared with the public through nurses, exercise physiologists, and other wellness professionals. Since that time the art and science of professional massage therapy has continued to deepen and expand.

As you can see, there are many systems of bodywork, some are simpler and some more sophisticated, either way all of them have the potential to be deeply nurturing, healing, and of great benefit.

The professional massage therapists at Evoque are here to support your body, mind, and spirit on your wellness path. We are confident that you too will enjoy the numerous healing benefits of receiving regular massage therapy.

What are the benefits of massage?

Extensive scientific and anecdotal research shows that massage is beneficial to one’s health. Clients report that massage is a wonderful way to relax, de-stress, and heal!

Muscle performance: Studies show that massage improves muscle tone and lessens stiffness and soreness in muscles, this leading to better muscle quality and improved balance in the health of the muscles all of which are optimal for the prevention and healing of injuries. Massage stretches connective tissues and helps to both prevent and clear adhesions (fibrous bands of scar tissue) which naturally leads to enhanced sports performance.

Mental Acuity: Research shows that massage has both a stimulating and sedative effect on the nervous system which supports the overall well-being of the nervous system in a very effective manner. In addition, massage brings physiological awareness and connection to the areas being massaged. Overall, massage supports a state of relaxation and mental clarity while being an effective tool for self-healing.

Circulation: It is well known that every cell of the body requires oxygen, nutrients, hormones, antibodies, and water in a balanced flow in order to thrive. Massage improves overall circulation and oxygenation of the cells by dilating the blood vessels and then returning peripheral blood back towards the heart. Additionally, therapeutic massage helps to drain sluggish lymph material and remove toxins from the body. This increased circulation and elimination improves the overall health of every cell of the body.
